KFAN Interview

I sleep well and get on the road in time to have my coffee in Fredericksburg. After that I drive over to the station. One street sign makes me stop. I think about my uncle (Walter Schubert). My song “Letting Go“ is dedicated to his memory.

I remember all the vintage gear that is in the Lobby of KFAN - oh my what fun!

Robbi is sweeter than ever and we have a great time doing the interview. Besides two cuts from the album I play a song and mess up the lyrics quite a bit - but what the heck, gotta keep smiling:)

After saying goodbye I’m on my way to Kerrville. It’s a stormy day and the wind blows like crazy.

In Kerrville I do a quick Oil change and then explore the city. Not much there to explore I must say. After a while I drive out to Paula and Marty, the hosts of the concert. I can stay with them until next Thursday when I play in Houston. I have a little downstairs room all for myself.

I settle in and get ready to go out for dinner - oh how I love eating! Here are Marty and Paula.

Once back in the house I’m ready to crash - oh well I guess I have to play a little with the kiddie:)

Down South

I’m leaving early and am planning to drive all the way to Fredericksburg where I have an interview with KFAN Texas Rebel Radio (don’t you love that name!) in the morning. It feels good to see the vast horizon and I’m instantly back in travel mode.

The further South I go the more changes the landscape and I feel that I enter the Hill Country.

It’s great to have the GPS so I can concentrate on something else than reading maps and trying to figure out how I get there.

The drive is longer than I have expected and around 6pm I feel completely wiped. It’s only about an hour to Fredericksburg but I feel I have to stop and get a little motel. I get some food to go, a beer and then I settle in and watch some Stargate:)

One more day before I have to drive again

This is my last day in Lubbock or better Ransom Canyon. I’ll do some cooking tonight but most of the day I spend playing guitar and writing new things until I drop.

Danny had a night shift and is a little sick, so he only joins us for a little bit during dinner. It’s an early night and I get to bed before midnight.

A little rest

I’m just resting and playing music all day long. I’m playing less shows than last year but I also have some downtime which feels great. In the afternoon we’re going on a little trip around the canyon and look at some great architecture. Here is my favorite! It reminds me about Hundertwasser, an Austrian artist that lived in Vienna.

Lubbock UU

I have to get up early and get ready to drive to Lubbock and do the church gig. It’s a wonderful morning and I’m looking forward to this. They don’t have a regular minister so I get the stage after 20 minutes of announcements and introductions. It’s very cool and I just play for 40 minutes and tell stories. Too bad I forgot my camera. These people are sooooo nice. This becomes the most successful weekend of my career as a solo artist and I’m selling more than 50 CDs in two concerts!
After saying long goodbyes Monika and me are going for a little bite. Danny has to go back to the hospital, his mother is not doing well. After we’re back in the Canyon I get a Tai Chi lesson from Monika. She studied with a master and is one herself! - Man do I need to do something. I feel so stiff!

Lubbock House Concert

I spend most of the day relaxing. After that I drive into Lubbock to work on emails and other stuff. When I come back to the house it’s time to get ready.
People are starting to come and we get about thirty people.

It’s great to be back and feels like home. I know that no matter how big everything gets, I’ll always do these house concerts. There is nothing more exciting than playing totally acoustic and being so close to folks!

The house is set up in different levels...

Here are my hosts Monika and Danny. They are very sweet people with the biggest heart you can imagine.

Hanging Out

It’s a low key day - Danny and Monika are both working and I’m alone in the house. After playing guitar for a while I’m taking a stroll and walk along the lake.

After all it’s beautiful here!

I remember this strange house that I photographed last year and yes, there it is. The builder is an architect and the people in the Canyon either love it or hate it.

After I’m back I take a short trip into town to do some email stuff. Lubbock must be the flattest place with the biggest sky in the world.

Tomorrow is the house Concert and I’m looking forward to playing again after a weeks rest!

Leaving Tucson for Texas

Ok, time is up - I really enjoyed the stay with Eric and Marsha and am a little sad that I have to leave but the journey goes on. Maybe I can switch cars...

Maybe not - I love my “Dorothy” and after all we’re not in Kansas anymore.
One last goodbye shot with Eric.

Off it goes. Right in the beginning I pass a huge air force facility with tons of jets and planes.

After several hours I cross the border into New Mexico. Another great state - very beautiful but I’m glad I’m driving, not walking.

The desert stretches out in all directions. I get my time worpeed feeling again where I totally imagine these places several hundred years ago looking the same as now - well besides the highway.

Las Cruzes is a great stretch and the mountains there remind me of Mordor and “Lord of the Rings” I should have stopped but there is so much more ground to cover.

By nightfall I arrive in Roswell and think for second about stopping and getting a motel but then I get a new wind and drive all the way to Ransom Canyon. After about 12 hours of non stop driving I’m finally there and settle in.

So good to see my friends Monika and Danny again.

Floating through the days

The days are going by slowly and I enjoy staying in one place, getting up in the morning and play my guitar after I get a cup of coffee...What more can I possibly want?

They have a beautiful spacious house and I love the colors.

After I have a little breakfast I go back to the porch and continue writing of a song I started a couple of days before.

The rest of the day I simply float...

Hanging out

It’s a slow morning and I get up late. I found my camera again, it was under the bed - no idea what shuffled it there... I go out and get some food for tonight. Eric and Marsha invited a friend over for dinner and I want to do some vegetarian dishes.

It’s another beautiful day and I love the short drive and knowing that I have a place to crash for several days. Wow, I didn’t realize the buggy in the picture - that brings back memories...

Back at the house I park right next to on of my favorites...

I get my guitar and go on the back porch and start playing until the evening comes. The sundown ist stunningly beautiful.

Then it’s time for a beer and cooking - oh how I love that! I’ll make brussel sprouts in Orange sauce, my favorite Kale dish, portabello mushrooms and some bellpepper.

Everybody appreciates the cooking and it’s a good opening for a wonderful evening in pleasant company!

Wow already so late...I’m ready for bed

Tucson Radio and Hernry's Smoked Salmon

I get up early and ready to roll. First I’m going to play at alittle Spiritual Center about 30 miles South of Eric’s house. He’s the MD and invited me to play. After we left I realize that I forgot my camera back at the house - darn, it’s beautiful here and...well, it in my head somewhere!

The people at the center are very nice and love what I do. After the service is over Eric, Marsha and me drive back to Tucson to the KXCI Station where I have a one hour interview with Henry Hallett. He’s super nice and brought a tray of self smoked salmon - Oh how delicious!!! WE have a great interview and Eric and marsha stay and sing backup!. Once done Henry and me go out for a brewsky - yeah how fun! We chat until late and then he drives me back to the house. He comes in and now all of us go on until late night...Oh man, I could not find the camera and have no clue if I lost it or not...

Desert Living

I get up around 9 am and start driving past downtown Phoenix towards Tucson. I’ll play at a Cohousing Community.

I’ll make a stop at a cafe to fill up my tanks. The owner played violin. He’s from Romania and plays in the Phoenix Symphony. We had a great time chatting...

After that it’s driving again. I love it, especially when I see Palm trees and mountains.

The Co-housing is a hidden secret and I’m glad I had some instructions how to get there - even the GPS had nothing on the address...It’s beautiful!

I’m welcomed and they show me the Common house where the concert will be held, but first there is a dinner...goooooood.

We ended up in their little library where the couches were located. With only about 10m folks it made more sense. My friends Eric and Marsha came and after the show we went to their house where I’m going to stay for several days.
Soon after we arrived I was ready for bed - and bed I had!!!!

On the way to Arizona

Another goodbye, it is around 11 am when I leave Moorepark, James and Melida. One last one armed shot...

Yesterday I got a GPS, I’m thrilled, that made it so much easier and took a lot of stress oujt of the equation.

I’m always fascinated by the bridge work that is out there.

I love mountains so much!!! It makes me feel like a little boy wanting to jump out of the car and starting to run uphill - actually not a bad idea...

I remember a night drive on this highway several years ago while on tour with “Two Loons For Tea“. We finished a show at the Knitting Factory in Los Angeles and were booked the night afetr that in Tucson, so afetr the show we just got in our cars and drove on. By the time we hit this intersection I just saw PALM SPRINGS and OTHER DERSERT CITIES! No doubt where I’m going!!! So we all stopped in Palm Springs and got a Motel for a few hours...

After that it is desert for a while.

Here I’m crossing over into Arizona. It’s a crab shoot with my camera because it takes the pic about 2 seconds after I push the button, so most of the times it guess work.

I planned on taking a motel in Quarzsite, AZ but everything was taken, so I had to drive all the way to Phoenix where I finally crashed. Tomorrow I’m going to Tucson.
